M5 junction 27 concrete repairs – starting September 2024

We’re carrying out essential repairs to the concrete that makes up the base layer of M5 around junction 27 near Willand. This will maintain and improve safety for everyone using this busy section of road and reduce the need for unplanned closures.

We need to remove the surface layers above the concrete, meaning there will be closures and a contraflow on the M5 to keep everyone on the motorway safe. We’ll be starting near the central reservation, moving across the carriageway.

We’ll start this work after the main summer holiday time, and three lanes will be open in each direction for October half term, to minimise disruption. Our work will finish before Easter 2025.

Closure information

We’ll start on the evening of Monday 16 September with overnight (8.30pm to 6am) lane closures on the M5 around junction 27, at least one lane will remain open in each direction.

We’ll then have some overnight closures (8.30pm to 6am):

  • Wednesday 2 October & Thursday 3 October: M5 southbound junction 26 (Wellington) to 28 (Cullumpton). Diversion via A38 & B3181.
  • Friday 4 October & Saturday 5 October: M5 northbound junction 28 to 26. Diversion via B3181 & A38.

From 6am Saturday 5 October, a lane will be closed 24/7 on the northbound carriageway around junction 27. Three lanes will be open southbound, with traffic using the hard shoulder.

Three lanes will be open in each direction for half term, Friday 25 October to Monday 4 November.

There will then be further overnight closures of the southbound carriageway before the contraflow starts on Saturday 16 November. Once set up, two lanes will run in each direction on the southbound carriageway. Early next year, we’ll move traffic to the northbound side.

Please note, on Tuesday 10 September, we’ll be carrying out maintenance on the M5 northbound. The road will be closed between junctions 26 (Wellington) and 25 (Taunton) from 9pm to 6am. Diversion via A38.
